Save the Chimps is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing permanent sanctuary for the lifelong care of chimpanzees rescued from research laboratories, the entertainment industry, and the pet trade. Save the Chimp, Inc. was established in 1997 by our late founder Carole Noon, Ph.D., in response to the U.S. Air Force’s announcement that it was getting out of the chimpanzee research business.
Fauna Sanctuary, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to heightening awareness of the plight of captive chimpanzees and supporting the sanctuaries in North America who care for them. Fauna Sanctuary, Inc. is the U.S. affiliate of Fauna Foundation, the only chimpanzee sanctuary and nature reserve in Canada that provides a permanent home for chimpanzees rescued from medical research and entertainment, as well as houses other rescued animals.
The Center for Great Apes’ mission is to provide a permanent sanctuary for orangutans and chimpanzees who have been rescued or retired from the entertainment industry, from research, or from the exotic pet trade; to educate the public about captive great apes and the threats to conservation of great apes in the wild; and to advocate for the end of the use of great apes as entertainers, research subjects, and pets. The Center provides care with dignity in a safe, healthy, and enriching environment for great apes in need of lifetime care.
IOWA PRIMATE LEARNING CENTER - BONOBO HOPE
The Iowa Primate Learning Sanctuary is an animal research sanctuary in Des Moines, Iowa dedicated to understanding the origins and future of culture, language, tools and intelligence. Our mission is to provide a home of dignity and respect for these bonobos and their offspring, to continue the world-renowned cross-species, cross-cultural research across future generations and to expand the language work to include other nonhuman species. It is also to provide educational opportunities to the public to visit and to learn about this research on a first-hand basis through personal interaction.” The sanctuary is home to Teco and his family of six other Bonobos – Kanzi, Matata, Elikya, Maisha, and Nyota.
PAWS - PERFORMING ANIMAL WELFARE SOCIETY
PAWS is dedicated to the protection of performing animals, to providing sanctuary to abused, abandoned and retired captive wildlife, to enforcing the best standards of care for all captive wildlife, to the preservation of wild species and their habitat and to promoting public education about captive wildlife issues.
The Gorilla Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation, protection and wellbeing of gorillas and other great apes through interspecies communication research and education. Established in 1976, it is best know for “Project Koko,” the longest interspecies communication study in history, and the only one involving gorillas. It has evolved into an institution that provides a unique resource for great ape conservation, care and understanding.
